Ray Rodriguez, professor of molecular and cellular biology

A faculty member at UC Davis since 1977, Rodriguez is a pioneer in genetic engineering. He has been director of the Center of Excellence for Nutritional Genomics since it was established in 2003 with a grant from the National Institutes of Health. In 2000, he co-founded the Laboratory for High Performance Computing and Informatics.
As an A.P. Giannini Foundation Fellow, Rodriguez received postdoctoral training at UC San Francisco where he developed technologies that now serve as the foundation of the modern biotechnology industry. He holds 16 patents. Rodriguez has also worked with the Human Genome Project and established the organization that laid the groundwork for mapping the rice genome.
In 1993, Rodriguez founded Ventria Bioscience, a biotech company dedicated to making crops that contain human proteins that promote health and nutrition. He served as chair of the company until 1999 and still sits on the company's scientific advisory board. He is also chair and chief executive officer of the Davis Bioscience Group, a consulting and venture capital company.
